A century of civil engineering
An independent firm, founded on the technical principles of Eduardo Torroja, that has been designing landmark infrastructure projects in Spain and around the world since 1927.
An independent consulting firm
TORROJA INGENIERÍA S.L.P. was founded in 2004 as a spin-off of José A. Torroja Oficina Técnica S.A., which in turn succeeded and continued the civil engineering activities carried out by the Technical Office of the distinguished engineer Eduardo Torroja, which had been in operation since 1927.
Since its inception, our company has been an independent consulting firm. The entire capital has always been owned by the engineers who have managed it.
«We have been involved in the design of more than 300 projects across all fields of civil engineering: bridges, special structures, ports, storage facilities, buildings, canals and pipelines, roads, and railways.»
From the very beginning, our design work has been complemented by our involvement in construction management, particularly in the field of large-scale structures.
We have been pioneers in the development of Structural Maintenance Management Systems, leading the way in new methods for inspecting and evaluating existing structures, as well as assessing the potential risk of scouring in structures located over waterways. To date, the engineers at TORROJA INGENIERÍA S.L.P. have conducted more than 5,000 bridge inspections.
These activities are complemented by the preparation of consulting reports, project supervision, and the drafting of manuals, recommendations, and regulations for the public sector.

The Legacy of Eduardo Torroja
In 1927, Eduardo Torroja established his engineering firm in Madrid, through which he carried out his numerous well-known projects, most notably his famous laminated reinforced concrete structures.
«Before and above all calculation is the idea, to mould the material as a resistant form in order to fulfil its mission.» Eduardo Torroja Miret, 1899–1961
His name is commonly associated with those of Robert Maillart, Eugène Freyssinet, and Pier Luigi Nervi as the four engineers who most influenced the development of concrete in the first half of the 20th century.
Upon his death in 1961, his son, José Antonio Torroja—also an engineer, who had joined the firm years earlier—took over the business and continued its operations, opening up new fields of activity and expanding the technical staff.
In 1967, the company José A. Torroja, Oficina Técnica S.A. was incorporated, attracting individuals excited by the opportunities for personal expression that the firm offered, such as engineer José Mª de Villar, who assumed the role of CEO in the 1980s.
This company remained in operation until 2004, when, to facilitate the entry of new partners and reorganize its areas of activity, it was transformed into TORROJA INGENIERÍA S.L., which inherited all of the consulting firm’s operations.
