The A-44 Tropical Coast Highway in Spain is owned by the “Red de Carreteras del Estado”. It connects Bailen (Jaén) with La Gorgoracha (Granada).
The Dúrcal – Alhendín section of the motorway is 18,5 km long and was opened in 2001.
TORROJA INGENIERIA did the Detailed Design of the structures for this section, including 6 overpasses (they are continuous prestressed concrete slabs supported on circular shafts), 16 underpasses, most them are reinforced concrete frames and 2 special viaducts; one was 100 m long and the other was 300 m long.
The overpass near the town of Durcal is a special structure. A reinforced concrete arch was designed; the span is 55 m long and it has a rise of 5,5 m, so span-to-rise ratio is 1/10, making it a segmental and slender arch. The width of the deck is 9,0 m.
