The A-67 Motorway, Cantabria – Meseta is a dual carriageway that connects Cantabria to the province of Palencia in the region of Castilla-León. The distance from its starting point in Venta de Baños to its final point in Santander is 205 km and it crosses the mountain range called the Cordillera Cantábrica. The complicated orography of the mountainous area gave rise to a very difficult design process and therefore some special viaducts had to be designed.
In the Molledo – Pesquera section the following structures are especially noteworthy: the double tunnel of Somaconcha (1600 m), the viaducts of Los Arroyos (442 m), La Torca (148 m), Pujayo (420 m), Montabliz (705 m) and Ríoseco (190 m) as well as 3 overpasses, 3 underpasses and some culverts for transverse drainage.
The Pujayo and Montabliz Viaducts really stand out due to their technical complexity. They are both made of one single deck for both carriageways, 26,1 m wide. They are both continuous prestressed box girders, with a main span of 100 m in the Pujayo Viaduct and 175 m in the Montabliz Viaduct. Another special feature of the Montabliz Viaduct is one of its piers, P2, which is 130 m high. It is the highest pier in Spain and one of the highest piers in Europe.
