This design project is about the widening, by one extra lane in each direction, of the GC-1 highway in the Gando Airport – Maspalomas section. Another aim of the design was to increase the interior hard shoulders up to 1,5 m and the roadside verges an extra 0,25 m in the Gando – Tarajalillo section.
The design project encompassed the widening procedures of the structures. The widening of the existing structures is based on using the space of the central reservation of the dual carriageway. Therefore, all the structures of the section were widened by 3,75 m, the space allocated to the central reservation, perpendicular to the alignment of the highway.
In the Tarajillo – Maspalomas section the existing structures were already prepared to carry 3 lanes, so the only alterations needed were to widen each deck by 0,25 m, to be able to replace the existing barriers.
To widen the structures of the remaining sections (5 precast prestressed I-girders, 4 prestressed solid or voided slabs, and 2 reinforced concrete voided slab) a different solution for each type of structure was designed: new extra beams for precast I-girders, extending the top concrete slab, new slab structures and connecting the cantilevers of the new and existing slab structures.
