Milestones in the history of engineering

  • 2015

  • Viaduct over the River Ulla

High-speed rail viaduct holding the world record for span in mixed truss bridges for high-speed rail, with spans of up to 240 m. ACHE-2011 Award and V Acueducto de Segovia Prize.

  • 1972

  • Andaráx Bridge

First prestressed concrete railway bridge built in Spain by the incremental launching method from one of its approaches — now standard practice in bridge construction.

  • Since 1990

  • Bridge Management System

First comprehensive bridge maintenance management system developed and implemented in Spain for the Directorate General of Roads of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works.

Inspection and management methods

Watercourse inspection method

TORROJA INGENIERÍA S.L.P. has developed a new method for inspecting watercourses in the vicinity of bridge structures, with the aim of assessing the potential scour risk of bridges over rivers and streams.

The principles underpinning this work and the methodology for carrying it out were pioneering, not only in Spain but also within the international scientific community.

This system has already been used in contracts with the Directorate General of Roads of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and with Abertis Autopistas España.

Bridge Management Systems

TORROJA INGENIERÍA S.L.P. has designed, developed, programmed and implemented an entire family of Bridge Management Systems, including the one for the Directorate General of Roads of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works.

It was the first comprehensive bridge maintenance management system developed and implemented in Spain. Similar systems have also been deployed for toll motorway concessionaires.

The firm’s engineers have carried out more than 5,000 bridge inspections using this methodology.
